When Garry S. visited Kardinia Denture Clinic in June, he was dealing with several serious medical conditions. This 63-year-old man was referred to our denture clinic Geelong from Barwon Health because he urgently needed several teeth extracted. He also needed dentures to replace the extracted teeth before he could receive a much-needed surgical procedure. In addition to enduring the stress and hassle associated with the COVID-19 lockdown that Melbourne was under at the time, Garry was struggling with liver disease and diabetes. Before he could receive a liver transplant at Austin Hospital, he needed the teeth extraction and dentures from our clinic. The reason for this requirement was to reduce the risk of a post-transplant infection.
Getting accustomed to wearing and chewing with dentures often requires time and effort. However, Garry needed to be able to chew food after the transplant to aid in his recovery. While we were working on a tight timeline, Garry was an excellent patient with a positive attitude. The full top and partial lower dentures were being custom-made for Garry when we learned that his transplant operation had been scheduled. While Austin Hospital was only open for emergency treatments at the time and Garry faced numerous challenges and stressors while being seriously ill, he continued to wear a smile. More than that, he was a fast learner and got accustomed to his first set of dentures quickly.
When Garry visited our denture clinic Geelong for a follow-up visit in October, he was visibly healthier after a successful liver transplant. He was having a few minor issues with his dentures, and these were quickly resolved during that visit with a few small adjustments. With our help, the support of his daughters and his boundless optimism, Garry adjusted well to his dentures and is a source of confidence and pride for our team at Kardinia Denture Clinic.
